I’ve had countless numbers of people ask me why I spend so much effort on young earth creationism and not spend more time preaching the Gospel and salvation through Jesus Christ. Recently I was asked this question again by a fellow believer, so I thought I would take this opportunity to explain why I spend so much time and effort on young earth creationism.
When the Apostle Paul wrote his first letter to the church in Corinth, he told them how preaching the same thing to all people can be a stumbling block to some. 1 Corinthians 1:22-23 says:
For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles.
Paul found that preaching Christ crucified to many of these people was a stumbling block because they lacked the proper foundation upon which to understand it. Yes, the Jews should have had the necessary foundation of the Old Testament and the promise of the Messiah. Most of the Jews in Paul’s day gave up on the Messiah and believed it to be nothing more than a promised that would never be fulfilled in their lifetime, thus it became a stumbling block to them when he preached Christ crucified.
However, when preaching Christ crucified to the Greeks, it was mere folly and foolishness to them because they had no foundation upon which to relate it to. The Greeks did not know of creation or the fall. They did not understand why they needed to believe in some dead man who supposedly rose from the dead.
Today in America we have one to two generations that have no biblical foundation whatsoever. Fifty years ago, the Bible, God and Jesus Christ were ripped from the public schools. Later they were ripped from government and most other forms of public life.
But as one of the laws of physics, that I still remember, says that a vacuum will not remain a vacuum if given the chance to be filled with anything. (You can tell I’m not a physics major.) When you remove Christianity from the public schools and government, something will most certainly fill the vacuum left behind. In the case of the United States, that vacuum was filled with the godless religion of naturalistic evolution.
This has been drilled into our children for decades. They are taught no other alternative, except for New Age mysticism. The result is that we have a generation or two that do not know what the Bible teaches. All they know is that the Bible is folly and foolishness that can’t be trusted because evolution has proved it wrong.
To come to them and preach the Gospel and Christ crucified is also folly and foolishness. They have no foundation upon which to understand the need of a Savior. They don’t understand the concept of biblical sin, damnation or heaven. They need a foundation upon which to grasp the importance of the Gospel.
A very dear friend of mine, Peter Kambale Amani, lives in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire). He is a Christian missionary to his own people. Some years back, I asked Peter how he reaches the people that know nothing of the Bible. Do you preach the Gospel to them?
I’ll never forget the look on Peter’s face when he leaned back away from me and looked at me as if I were stupid. Then in his thick native accent, he said emphatically “No! That does not work!” He then went on to explain that he starts with Genesis and creation, teaching them about how God created a perfect world and everything in it. Then Adam chose to disobey God and brought sin into the world and death along with it. He carefully shows them that we are all descendants of Adam and all cursed to eternal death. Then he teaches them about Jesus, the Son of God, come to earth to die for our sins and that he rose again from the dead and lives in heaven forever and forever. Finally, he shows them Christ’s own words about salvation and eternal life.
Peter has reached several thousand of his countrymen with the saving grace of Jesus and he did it by laying out a foundation upon which to build the Gospel upon. The Apostle Paul did the same thing. Even Christ taught from Genesis when it was necessary.
Over my many years as a Christian, I have worked with Evangelism Explosion along with personal evangelism. I have found a far greater success starting with creation and then preaching the Gospel, than just straight out preaching Christ crucified. America is a nation of unbelievers with very little knowledge of the Bible and if you want to reach them with the Good News, start from the beginning. Otherwise, they will be like the Greeks and think it folly and foolishness.
This presentation was given live to some 2000 people, many of them students, at South Africas renowned university town of Stellenbosch. Afterwards, 30 university students came forward to publically profess faith in Christ. Its clear that in this age of science and technology, we need to deal with the evolution issue head-on, from an unashamedly biblical standpoint.
