Why Haven’t Animals Evolved Defenses Against Us?

Posted on

As I was scanning the science news sites, a question caught my eye that I just had to share with you.  The question was, ‘Why Haven’t Animals Evolved Defenses Against Us?’

Professor Geerat Vermeij of the University of California at Davies asked this question based upon his studies on evolution and predator – prey relationships.

He believes that predators have been evolving attack strategies and prey species have been evolving defense strategies in response and then the cycle repeats and repeats.

One example he uses has to do with the size of the prey species.  Vermeij believes that animals such as elephants evolved their large size so that predators like lions will not prey upon them.

Another example he uses is animals that could not grow big enough evolve different defense mechanisms such as marine organisms with a shell.  They evolve a thicker shell for safety.  Then predators evolve a way to drill through the shell, so the prey evolves a toxin to kill the predator.

I recall watching a program a few years ago that said that a certain species of tree in Africa was heavily foraged by local wildlife.  Over millions of years, the trees and animals that fed on them have been in an evolutionary war that is still going on today.  The tree then evolved thorns to protect itself and in response, the animals evolved thicker tongues to cope with the thorns.  Next the trees evolved longer and thicker thorns up to 3-4 inches long.  The animals tongues evolved even thicker and they learned to chew off the thorns to clear the way to reach the foliage and bark.  In defense, the trees evolved a toxin in the foliage but the animals evolved a way of eating the newest foliage that contained lesser amounts of toxin so as to allow the animals the chance to build up an immunity to it which takes us to the present day stage of this evolutionary war.

Vermiej then wonders why the plants and animals that man preys upon have not evolved any defenses in the supposedly several hundred thousand years of human evolution.  He refers to man as the super-predator and believes that at least some of the plants and animals affected by us should have started to evolve some kind of defenses against us, but he can find no real evidence of it happening.

He concludes by saying:

Our arrival and technological history has engendered an enormous change in the evolution of most species on Earth.

Vermeij believes that we super-predators have caused a cataclysmic shift to evolution and have left prey species no way to defend themselves nor do they have any way of evolving a new defense against us.

First of all, I have asked evolutionists in the past to explain to me how a plant or animal can suddenly evolve a totally new characteristic such as thorns, toxins, or large size?

Secondly, how do they know what defense to evolve and from where do they obtain the genetic information necessary to produce such changes?

This is one of the major problems with the theory of evolution is that there is no real explanation for controlled or directed evolutionary processes described by Vermeij and others.

The only viable explanation is the one we get from reading the text of the One who created everything in the beginning.  He programmed all of the information necessary in plants and animals and many of those traits have been expressed through various circumstances over the last 6,000 years.  If expected traits are not found, such as defense mechanisms against humans, then most likely they weren’t there from the beginning.

This would also make sense since God gave man dominion over all of creation and told him to use the plants and animals, but in a wise way so as not to abuse them.  Therefore, there would be no need for them to have the defense mechanisms that evolutionists expect them to have.

By Design: Evidence for nature’s Intelligent Designer–the God of the Bible

At last, a definitive work on design by a leading biblical creationist…

Today, the ID (intelligent design) movement is capturing headlines (and igniting controversy) around the world. But in the process, many are coming to think that a credible challenge to the dominant Darwinian naturalism of our time means backing away from a clear stand for the truth of the Bible.

Now creationist heavyweight Jonathan Sarfati, whose Refuting Evolution has the most copies in print of any creation book ever, challenges this mindset head on. In the process, By Design is set to become a classic of the creation movementin the same vein as Dr Sarfatis comprehensive Refuting Compromise, which is arguably the most powerful biblical and scientific defense of straightforward Genesis in existence.

When man was a hunter/gatherer he wasn’t much of a greater or different threat than big cats, bears or wolves. Deer would have already been fast runners, good jumpers, mastedons were already large, with trunks and tusks. After man began agriculture, the plants and animals that were domesticated benefited from the relationship, even if some of them ended up in man’s food supply. And aggressive, dangerous characteristics would have been bred out.

It is categorically false that “Our arrival and technological history has engendered an enormous change in the evolution of most species on Earth”. The author of this article is obviously another ignorant x-tian with his bible thumping head stuck up his self-righteous butt and knows very little about evolution. Evolution is as a process that takes a long time (millions of years) and involves the replacement of species that die out due to changes in environment. Animals can and do learn to fear and avoid men but that is a Pavlovian reaction to men’s predation. That is NOT evolution! Rats, coyotes, cockroaches and certain other vermin have been able to thrive alongside men. When, and if, mankind ever finally wipes itself out, many species will adapt to these conditions and thrive also. That may even involve evolution but it will be “adapting” to a new environment, not as a defense against man.

el_loco_jp – the author of this article obviously knows more about evolution than you do. And I see you even used some of the same inane and childish insults here you used on another article on this site (such a sad troll).

Because God has given us dominion over them . Next question ?

There are poisonous plants we can’t eat. There are venemous animals that are deadly to mankind.
