Paleontologists in Peru have reported finding the fossil remains of a giant penguin nearly twice the size of today’s emperor penguin.  Named Inkayacu paracasensis, or Water King, the newly discovered specimen was found with well preserved feathers and scales.

Not only does the find give scientists more knowledge of the shape of the flippers along with the feathers and scales of extinct penguins, but they are also excited about what they found contained within the feathers.  According to the article in Science, they claim to have found preserved melanosomes.

Melanosomes are small (nano and micro) organelles within a cell that contain melanin. Depending on the shape and structure of the grape-like clusters of the melanosomes and the degree of melanin contained within them has led the scientists to determine that the Water King penguin was reddish brown and grey in color.

Their evolutionary presuppositions have led the paleontologists to declare that this penguin lived 36 million years ago in the late Eocene period.   Their underlying belief in billions and millions of years precludes any consideration of the fossilized penguin living in more recent times.

Yet, when we start with the Bible, we know that the penguin lived no more than 6000 years ago.  Within the circle of creation geologists, there is some controversy as to where some of the geologic layers fall in relation to Noah’s Flood, but for the purposes of this article, we will place the late Eocene as a post Flood deposit, making the fossil less than 4500 years old.

Given the two different presuppositional ages of the fossil penguin, one would have to ask the question of which view best explains the evidence presented in the report?

The reporting scientists want you to believe that this giant penguin lived some 36 million years ago, died and was buried in some kind of mechanism such as a slow gradual process or perhaps a small local flood.  Then while most of the remains of the penguin decayed and were replaced with certain minerals to turn it into a fossil, the nano and micro organelles within the cells of the feathers failed to decay completely and were preserved for 36 million years.

Starting with Gods Word, we would say that after Noah’s Flood, the animals on the Ark dispersed throughout the world.  With no population pressures existing at the time, there would have been rapid reproduction rates and rapid dispersion of the penguins to various regions. This rapid dispersion would have resulted in rapid speciation yielding all sizes and possibly colors of penguins in different areas.  Over the several hundred years after the Flood, there was a lot of changes occurring through the Earth as it settled down from the effects and pressures of the Flood.  Numerous local flooding would have occurred as landlocked seas and lakes breached their confines.  Many newly formed species would have been caught up in these local disasters, causing them to be suddenly buried and their remains preserved in the layers of silt that covered them less than 4500 years ago.

It is much more conceivable to believe that the melanosomes and other organic materials from the carcasses would have been preserved for a mere few thousand years, rather than millions of years.  Starting with man’s assumptions of the past that completely ignore the biblical account of history, it is very difficult to explain the preservation of the fossil.  However, when we start with God’s Word, the fossil evidence is easily explained and believable.
