“This discovery pushes the detection of water one billion years closer to the Big Bang than any previous find.”
Just to confirm, then, you agree that the universe is at least one billion years old, correct?
Actually, Dennis, the discovery of water elsewhere in the universe helps confirm the biblical account of Creation and a young universe, so no, I do not agree that the universe is a billion years old.
Some years back I had the privilege of sitting down and talking with Dr. Russell Humphreys, physicist and author of Starlight and Time. The main topic of our conversation centered on the reports, from various scientists and NASA, of them finding evidence of water or ice in more and more locations in outer space. In Dr. Humphrey’s book, he predicted that wherever man looked in the solar system, galaxy and universe that he should find evidence of water since that is what God started with from the beginning. He based his prediction on his understanding of God’s description of Creation in Genesis 1. With his help we did like the Bereans and went to Scripture.
Dr. Humphreys explained that God started with water in Genesis 1:1-2:
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the deep, and the Spirit of God moved upon the waters.
Notice that there was nothing but water mentioned here. That would also explain why the earth was without form and void. Most likely, it was in the middle of the water, but had not yet been formed. Then God separated the waters in Genesis 1:6-8.
He then pointed out some very interesting things that happened in Genesis 1:14-18 on Day 4:
And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven, to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years. And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. God then made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made also the stars. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven, to shine upon the earth, And to rule in the day, and in the night, and to separate the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.
Here, he points out that God placed the sun, moon and stars in the firmament BETWEEN the waters above and the waters below. By stars, it means the visible universe. The waters above had to be beyond the sun, moon and all the visible stars.
Then Dr. Humphreys pointed out that Scripture actually states that the earth was formed out of water as we read in 2 Peter 3:5:
For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God.
In conclusion, God started with water and then created everything else out of it, including the earth and the rest of the universe. The discovery of water throughout the universe serves to confirm the Bible and God’s Word and in no way proves an old universe.
COAL: Ancient Gift Serving Modern Man
American Coal Foundation
How Coal Is Formed
Coal is called a fossil fuel because it was formed from the remains of vegetation that grew as long as 400 million years ago. It is often referred to as “buried sunshine,” because the plants which formed coal captured energy from the sun through photosynthesis to create the compounds that make up plant tissues. The most important element in the plant material is carbon, which gives coal most of its energy.
Most of our coal was formed about 300 million years ago, when much of the earth was covered by steamy swamps. As plants and trees died, their remains sank to the bottom of the swampy areas, accumulating layer upon layer and eventually forming a soggy, dense material called peat.
Over long periods of time, the makeup of the earth’s surface changed, and seas and great rivers caused deposits of sand, clay and other mineral matter to accumulate, burying the peat. Sandstone and other sedimentary rocks were formed, and the pressure caused by their weight squeezed water from the peat. Increasingly deeper burial and the heat associated with it gradually changed the material to coal. Scientists estimate that from 3 to 7 feet of compacted plant matter was required to form 1 foot of bituminous coal.
Coal formation is a continuing process (some of our newest coal is a mere 1 million years old). Today, in areas such as the Great Dismal Swamp of North Carolina and Virginia, the Okefenokee Swamp of Georgia, and the Everglades in Florida, plant life decays and subsides, eventually to be covered by silts and sands and other matter. Perhaps millions of years from now, those areas will contain large coal beds.
Hoite, thank you for your response to this article and for the post you made. This is a typical example of what the secular world teaches. When I read your response, I realized that I left out an important piece of information dealing with the formation of coal.
There have been numerous experiments run to see how fast wood or peat can be turned into coal. Some experiments involve placing a piece of wood, clay minerals and water in a heavy galvanized pipe, sealing the pipe tightly and then placing it in a type of experimental oven at temperatures around 150ºC (302ºF) for an extended period of time. The experiment can be run for different time durations, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, etc. Then comparing each piece of wood, one can determine the amount of coalification that has taken place and determine how long it would take to completely coalify the piece of wood.
If you search online, you can find several of these experiments. An extensive article on the rapid formation of coal and a coalification experiment can be found at: Coal, volcanism and Noah’s Flood.
This is one of many experiments that have been run over the years that have proven that it doesn’t take millions of years to turn wood into coal.
