The blame game is nearly as old as man himself. Ever since Adam sinned in the Garden of Eden, man has been trying to find excuses to justify his sinful behaviors. When confronted by God, Adam blamed Eve and Eve blamed the serpent. We are so quick to blame someone or something for our wrong behavior in a feeble attempt to appease the guilt we feel inside.
These days, we see concerted efforts to use evolution to not only excuse our sinful behaviors and lifestyles but also to justify them.
In yesterday’s article, The Origin of Human Prejudice, we saw how some researchers are trying to justify our tendency to form prejudices against others. According to them it’s part of our 25 million year evolutionary history that we share with monkeys and apes. In other words, I can’t help being prejudice against you because its part of my genetic heritage. I have a legitimate excuse for my sinful behavior. It’s not my fault!
The August 15, 1994 Time magazine cover article read: Infidelity: It may be in our genes. The article was reporting on a new study that studied the great apes, our supposed closest evolutionary relatives. Based on the premise that chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans were not monogamous the researchers concluded that it is not in man’s evolutionary genetic makeup to be faithful to their spouses. Since polygamy is genetic, we should expect humans to cheat on each other. In other words, I can’t help cheating on my spouse because its part of my genetic heritage. I have a legitimate excuse for my sinful behavior. It’s not my fault!
Over the past twenty years I’ve also seen articles claiming that other sinful behaviors and lifestyles are the result of our evolutionary history and are therefore genetic and can’t be helped. These sinful behaviors and lifestyles also include homosexuality, pedophilia, rape, assault and bullying to name a few. In one form or another, someone has tried to justify these sins by claiming that they are genetic because of evolution. In other words, I can’t help cheating on my spouse because its part of my genetic heritage. I have a legitimate excuse for my sinful behavior. It’s not my fault!
No matter what evolutionists try to do to explain away sinful behaviors and lifestyles, it doesn’t nullify the fact that sin is sin. What’s scary is that once a people or nation starts to accept these sinful lifestyles as being okay and normal, it has always lead to God’s judgment and the eventual downfall of that nation or people. Romans 1:18-32 spells out how God views these things and how He judges the people who do them:
18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, 25because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
26For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; 27and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.
28And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. 29They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, 30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.
Here in America, more and more our nation has been trying to legalize some of these sinful behaviors, especially homosexuality. It is being taught in our public schools as an acceptable lifestyle that students can explore. More and more businesses are offering benefits to the same sex partners of employees. Some states have been trying to legalize same sex marriage. Many people are trying to get any anti-homosexual talk to be considered hate language.
America, along with a few other nations, is not only embracing these sinful actions but also approving of those who practice them. Consequently, as you read Romans 1 it is clear that America is under God’s judgment and if we as a nation continue on our current course we will soon destroy ourselves from within as did Rome.
As individuals and as a nation, we need to follow 2 Chronicles 7:14 that instructs us with:
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
Only when we stop blaming our sins on a non-existing evolutionary history or on others and humble ourselves, seek God and turn from our wicked ways will we be able to save our nation from certain judgment and destruction, As a nation we need to humble ourselves by getting on our knees, confess our sins and ask God for His forgiveness in the name of His Son Jesus Christ. Then we need to seek after God by studying His Word, turn from our worldly ways and desires and follow His teachings. Then and only then will He heal our land and lift the judgment we are now under.
