The Best Defense is a Good Offense

Posted on

In today’s Feed Back, the antagonist who identifies themselves as Human Ape sent us his initial attack.  I responded with one of my usual challenges.  Human Ape’s second response is full of expletives which I have tried to soften, but left in to demonstrate the level to which they resorted to.

From: Human Ape
Subject: fear

Why are you uneducated morons terrified of evolutionary biology?

Response Sent:

Before responding may I ask what your credentials are to make such a blatant statement?  What is YOUR educational background?

I have a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife & fisheries biology and a Master of Science degree in Biology (population genetics was the topic of my thesis).

Do you have any educational background in biology or are you just repeating the typical rhetoric you hear from others?

From: Human Ape
Subject: fear

If you’re an evolution denier you’re a disgrace to your profession.

I’m not a biologist but I’ve been studying evolution for several years. I know it’s a basic scientific fact. Every REAL biologist knows it’s a basic scientific fact. I got Harvard and MIT on my side. You got the Bible colleges on your side (AKA god’s magic wand). What magic words does your fairy use?

Apparently you’re educated but you’re still a moron. What’s your problem a**hole? Why your cowardly fear of evolution? Are you afraid you will make your dead Jeebus cry.

F*** off retard.

Creation Revolution? What a f***ing a**hole for Jeebus you are. You’re equal to a terrorist. F*** you tard.

Can you say “Human Chromosome Two”? Explain that you f***ing idiot. Then explain ARDI. Then explain ERVs. You f***ing subhuman.

Response Sent:

I intend to use your emails and my response to them for this coming Saturday’s Feed Back article which will post at 10:00am EDT.

All I will say for now is that I at least have the decency to converse with you with respect and courtesy.  Is it too much to ask the same or do you insist in exposing your lack of social graces and human decency?  But wait, if you believe in evolution so strongly, there is no basis for human decency or morality, therefore your language and tone reflect the moral bankruptcy of evolution.

P.S. – I have been studying biology for over 40 years.  The vast majority of my time has been and still is spent on reading and studying evolutionary premises and theories.  And for your information these is a growing number of Ph.D. scientists in secular positions that also believe in a literal young earth biblical creation.

Tune in on Saturday for a complete response.

Saturday Response:

Human Ape.  As promised, I am taking this opportunity to respond to your second email.

First of all I want to apologize for the unkind way I responded to your last message when I questioned your decency and morality.  Please accept my humble apology.

You say that you have been studying evolution over the past few years, but have you ever taken the time to study creationist views or are you just repeating typical anti-creationist rhetoric you have heard from others?  Did you try to look up creationist responses to the evidences you mention before challenging me with them?  Wouldn’t you agree that if you intend on attacking an opponent that it is best to learn as much about that opponent as possible?  Otherwise, you may well be setting yourself up for defeat.

As I told you in an earlier e-mail, I have been studying biology for over 40 years.  During those years I have studied and read evolutionary materials.  I have read everything the Charles Darwin and Thomas Huxley wrote including many letters that Darwin exchanged with others.  I have also extensively read the works of numerous other evolutionists.  I have even had the opportunity to meet and talk with noted evolutionists Niles Eldredge, John Ostrum, and John Horner.  I fully understand evolutionary theory and the way evolutionists interpret the evidence.

However, the issue between you and I is not one of evidence but one of foundational beliefs.  Do you realize that you and I both have the same facts?  The difference lies in how we interpret that evidence.  Obviously you have a foundational belief in billions of years of godless random processes and I have a foundational belief in the Bible and a Creator God.   May I inquire as to what lead you to your belief in evolution and million of years?  Have you always been an evolutionist or perhaps you started out as a Christian and something caused you to reject the Bible and embrace naturalistic humanism?

In my younger days I believed in theistic evolution; that is God used evolution as His process of creation.  Then someone showed me that evolution actually conflicts with the Bible and that it is contradictory to believe in both.  At first I wasn’t sure which way to turn, but it soon became apparent to me that evolution was based on the words and interpretation of fallible men.  Their interpretations which were always presented at fact were constantly changing, which meant that they couldn’t be facts after all.  However, God’s Word never changed and remained constant and true.  The choice was easy.

The more I studied biology the more I saw that the improbability and impossibility of evolution as being the source for all of life.  The complexity and order I saw in biology could not be the result of random chaotic processes.  I continued to study evolutionary explanations as well as creationist explanations and the only one that made sense of what I saw in the natural world was that everything had to be created by in infinite omniscient Creator God.  Evolution defies all of the laws of biology

At the end of your email, you mention human chromosome Two, ARDI and ERVs.

For Human Chromosome 2 please see Heads I win, tails you lose

For Ardi, the supposed ape-man link I will refer you to Time’s alleged ‘ape-man’ trips up (again)!

When I played football my coach repeatedly told us that the best defense is a good offense.  The same holds true in the defense of a nation.  The more offense weapons a country has the less likely they are of being attacked.

The some holds true with our Christian and creation faith.  Over the years, I’ve learned how to effectively turn the attacks of critics against them.  When I do, most of them just quietly slip away to find someone else to ridicule.  In other cases, such as the one below, the antagonist resorts to name calling and swearing in an attempt to hurt my feelings because they can’t provide the defense I challenged them on.

In his book Always Ready, Dr. Greg Bahnsen teaches that the argument between evolution and creation is not an argument of evidence versus evidence rather it is an argument of presuppositional foundations.  He points out that a proper response requires that we take account of (1) the God whom we represent, (2) the sinner to whom we speak, and (3) the context in which we reason with him.  Your starting point must start with the acknowledgment that God is Creator.  In this there is no neutral ground between the believer and unbeliever.

Dr. Bahnsen continues by explaining:

The central declaration and challenge of Christian apologetics is expressed by Paul’s rhetorical question, ‘hath not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?’ (1 Cor. 1:20).  Critical attacks which are leveled against the Christian faith in the world of thought cannot be met by piece-meal replies and appeals to emotion.  In the long run the believer the believer must respond to the onslaught of the unbeliever by attacking the unbeliever’s position at its foundations.  He must challenge the unbeliever’s presuppositions, asking whether knowledge is even possible, given the non-Christian’s assumptions and perspective. The Christian cannot forever be defensively constructing atomistic answers to the endless variety of unbelieving criticisms; he must take the offensive and show the unbeliever that he has no intelligible place to stand, no consistent epistemology, no justification for meaningful discourse, predication, or argumentation.  The pseudo-wisdom of the world must be reduced to foolishness—in which case none of the unbeliever’s criticisms have any force.

To learn more about how to effectively defend your Christian faith and take the offensive, I highly recommend you obtain a copy of Dr. Bahnsen’s book Always Ready.

One thing to consider is that no matter what kind of language the antagonist throws at you, like that of Human Ape, resist the temptation to respond in a similar matter.  Follow the guidelines of 1 Peter 3:14-16 and respond with gentleness and respect.

14 But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, 15but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, 16 having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.

Pray for the person you are conversing with.  Pray for yourself and that God will give you the right words to say.  And most importantly pray that the Holy Spirit will work a regeneration in the heart of the person you are dealing with so that they will see, hear and embrace Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.2>

Always Ready: Directions for Defending the Faith

This book is the best Christian apologetics work to be produced in many years.

Dr. Greg Bahnsen was one of the foremost apologists of our time.  He not only had a firm grasp of biblical defenses, but he also knew and understood many of the arguments used today to attack the Bible and Christianity.  In part five, he lists the 5 most frequently used attacks on the Bible and provides some great defenses to help you to counter them.

Using presuppositional apologetics, Dr. Bahnsen teaches you how to recognize the underlying foundation of evolutionary and other attacks on the Bible. By understanding the foundations, you will be able to give an adequate response and defend your faith.

This is a great book for high school students and up, Sunday school classes and small groups, as well as an important apologetic tool for the individual.  Each section of the book is followed by a series of review questions to help you learn how to form an effective biblical defense against a hostile secular world.
