When objects spin fast enough the centrifugal force will cause the middle to bulge out more than the rest of the object.  You can easily see the results of centrifugal force on many playgrounds that have a spinning merry-go-round.  The faster the merry-go-round spins, the harder it is to stand up or even hang on.  Eventually it will go so fast that it throws everyone off.

A larger example of centrifugal force can be seen by measuring our own earth.  We base our clocks on how long it takes the earth to rotate once on its axis.  If you were standing directly on the equator at 12:00 a.m. and stayed at that same spot for 24 hours, you will have travelled 24,902 miles, which is the circumference of the earth at the equator.  The diameter of the earth at the equator is 7,926.677 miles, however the diameter of the earth from pole to pole is only 7,899.988 miles.  There is a difference of 26.689 miles.

That difference may not sound like much but it is enough to make our planet appear to be more oblate spheroid instead of completely spherical.  In simpler terms, the earth is fatter at the equator.  If the earth was reduced to the size of an average beach ball and rolled across the floor, it would wobble when it rolled because it is not perfectly round.

The reason for this is the centrifugal force placed on the equatorial regions of the earth as it spins on its axis.  Now consider the fact that the earth has a solid core and a fairly solid crust.  If the earth was completely solid, it would have very little, if any, bulging in the middle.  If the earth was more liquid, the equatorial bulge would be even greater.

Our sun has no solid core or surface.  It rotates on its axis every 28 days, which for a body as big as it is, is quite fast.  With everything scientists know about planets, moons and stars, the sun should be shaped similar to the earth, being wider at the equator, but it isn’t.  The sun has an equatorial diameter of 864,938 miles or about 109 times greater than that of the earth.  If one were to extrapolate the amount of bulge at the earth’s equator to the sun, there should be a difference of around 2,900 miles between the sun’s diameter at the equator and from pole to pole, but there isn’t.

A group of scientists from a number of different universities and facilities have been studying the dimensions of the sun and have verified that it is nearly perfectly round.  They said that if the sun were the size of an average beach ball, the difference in diameter between the equator and poles would be less than the thickness of a human hair, which means it would roll perfectly across the floor, unlike the way the earth would roll.

The sun’s virtually perfect spherical shape has the scientists baffled.  With no solid structures, it should have a greater bulge than the earth.  The only thing they can think of would have to be something inside the sun, such as solar magnetism or some other sub-surface phenomena that keeps its nearly perfect shape.

It’s amazing how many astronomical observations have been made over the decades that go against all of our human understanding.  Astrophysicists are constantly having to develop new laws or revise known laws to accommodate the new discoveries and findings.  And every time I read a report like this one on the sun that defies our known logic, it reminds me of the awesomeness of our Creator God and how infinitely wise He is.  It reminds me of what God said to Job in the 38th chapter, especially verses 31-33 where God asks Job:

Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loose the cords of Orion?  Can you lead forth the Mazzaroth in their season, or can you guide the Bear with its children?  Do you know the ordinances of the heavens?  Can you establish their rule on the earth?
