When you think of our senses, we automatically think of vision, hearing, touching, tasting and smelling.  These are the means that we use to experience the world around us.

Now, Martin von Arx, a University of Arizona entomologist, has discovered another unique sense in hawkmoths.  By studying the white-lined sphinx hawkmoth, von Arx discovered that they can detect humidity and can use that sense to determine which flowers contain nectar and if there is enough nectar in the flower to make it worthwhile for the moth to expend its energy to retrieve.

Studies have shown that hovering outside a flower while using its long tongue to probe deep into the flower is very energy draining and if there is not sufficient nectar to be found, it becomes a huge waste of vital energy.  With its concentration on the flower, this activity also leaves the hawkmoth more vulnerable to predators such as birds and bats.

Additionally, flowers can give off false signals that have nothing to do with whether or not it contains nectar.  Flowers can attract insects with their size, shape, color, pollen and even their fragrant aroma, but none these may have any bearing on its nectar, since nectar is odorless.

In his study, von Arx discovered that when the hawkmoth does hover outside a flower, it quickly sees how much humidity is being released from within.  It quickly assess the amount of nectar within the flower by being able to detect the tiniest amount of humidity difference emanating from the flower.  If there is a sufficient supply, then the hawkmoth will extend its long tongue and drink its fill.  If there is not enough nectar, the moth quickly moves to the next flower without wasting valuable energy.

I found the ability to actually see and interpret the humidity from within a flower to be a very unique and intriguing sense.  It’s intriguing because neither von Arx nor anyone else has postulated how this extraordinary sense could have evolved.  What is it that allows this particular moth to be able to see or detect the tiniest differences in humidity inside a flower?  Then you have ask how the hawkmoth is able to process that information and know how to properly respond to it?  Which part of the humidity detection evolved first and why was it preserved if it didn’t work properly until all of the other parts evolved?

These are the typical questions that I often challenge evolutionists with because I know they can’t properly defend them without making up ‘what if’ stories.

The only possible explanation is that they were designed that way from the very beginning.  And once again I turn to one of my favorite passages of Scripture, Job 12:7-10:

But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you.  Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this?  In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.
