Is the Megachurch the New Liberalism?

Posted on

The emergence of the megachurch as a model of metropolitan ministry is one of the defining marks of evangelical Christianity in the United States. Megachurches — huge congregations that attract thousands of worshipers — arrived on the scene in the 1970s and quickly became engines of ministry development and energy.

Over the last 40 years, the megachurch has made its presence known, often dominating the Christian landscape within the nation’s metropolitan regions. The megachurch came into dominance at the same time that massive shopping malls became the landmarks of suburban consumer life. Sociologists can easily trace the rise of megachurches within the context of America’s suburban explosion and the development of the technologies and transportation systems that made both the mall and the megachurch possible.

On the international scene, huge congregations can be found in many African nations and in nations such as Brazil, South Korea, and Australia. In London, where the megachurch can trace its roots back in the 19th century to massive urban congregations such as Charles Spurgeon’s Metropolitan Tabernacle, a few modern megachurches can be found. For the most part, however, the suburban evangelical megachurch is an American phenomenon….

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

The thought here is that, as the future unfolds, Christians will more and more despise and hate the doctrine taught by the apostles of Christ, preferring their own philosophies, systems and devices to those of the sacred Scriptures. Timothy must keep in mind that things in the church of Christ on earth will not change for the better.

Here is the seat of the trouble. The lusts of men, which at all risks they are determined to satisfy, lead them to despise the truth which condemns them; and yet, desiring to keep some semblance of religion, they are beguiled by evil thoughts by which they deceive themselves with soothing words, fantasies, speculations and philosophies of men.

It is not the mega church. It is us. For most of us, Sunday is a habit. We get dressed up, be very pious and generous, sing few songs, listen to aboring sermon, throw some money, meet the friends and rush to the Sunday brunch not even caring if he/she had cut off someone in the parking lot. Then they wait for the next Sunday. These people do not belong in the church. They must be watching Sunday foot ball game. Even if they did not attend church, God will not hold them guilty because their hearts ar not there. When people do not care, the PAstors do not care. God does not care about the churcha ttendance. He cares more about what we do and how we live between Sundays. Our work place, neighbors, shopping centers etc are our mission fields. What we do and how we reflect Christ in our lives between Sundays mean more to God than what we do on Sundays. So, why blame the Megachurches? We, the individual Followers of Christ must blame ourselves for not living the lives God has called us to live in between Sundays.

Of all the Megachurches I am aware of, I don’t see the New Testament pattern being followed in their preaching or worship. If these people think they are pleasing God, then they had better do a serious study of His Word. It is not the number of members in a Megachurch that is sinful, but it is the departure from the Doctrine of Christ, which is clearly patterned after pleasing men rather than pleasing God. This is the sinfullness that the Megachurches I am aware of are participating in.

Consider Paul’s words in Galatians: (Gal 1:10 KJV) “For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.”

The pure Gospel of Christ — sound doctrine (2 Tim 4:3-4) — is to be taught in assemblies, not the inclinations of men and women who want the big money producing churches and are willing to sacrifice the Truth to achieve their personal goals. The Apostle John’s teaching applies very much in this matter.

(2 John 1:9 KJV) “Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.”

(2 John 1:10 KJV) “If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:”

(2 John 1:11 KJV) “For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.”

What I hear and see them preach on TV is not the pure Gospel, rather it is a man made doctrine that will not stand before God. I hope that they come to see their condition before God.

Form matters. I’ve thought for YEARS that the mega church is incapable of feeding the sheep. Few shepards too many sheep. The FORM of the Christian Church as being “mega” is not a good institution.

If MY people (he didn’t say the lost) shall humble themselves….but how many of our leaders in a mega church or a small church take the time to pray for the innocent being led to slaughter in abortion mills in our country? How many in either stand up for Marriage against the homosexual lobby? How many actually take the time to go vote for candidates that don’t support abortion, homosexuality, and other filth. How many of us turn away or cast a lustful eye, when we know we should not. I speak to all of you as unto myself. God must love me to allow me to live for the little I have done for him at times.

A killer in Louisville, KY was found not guilty in court then on the court steps admitted he HAD killed a young lady who was the sister of my co-worker. Later, I read where he had gone to Louisville’s largest mega church and was accepted for membership. NOT ONE true Christian stood up and let it be known he was apposed to a killers acceptance into the fellowship without repentance! This validates your narrative. There is a fine line between worship and entertainment these days.
