An index fossil is one that typifies a certain geologic period or strata, or more simply stated, it is a fossil found in the Cambrian or Ordovician or one of the named strata and not found in any other.

A strange looking creature called a anomalocaridid has long been one of the Cambrian index fossils.  That is until a recent discovery of the largest specimen ever found, was not in Cambrian rock but was unearthed in Ordovician rock instead.  Thus another index fossil jumps over the index boundary into the next period.

Previous specimens measuring no more than 2 feet in length had only been found in Cambrian rock.  The new anomalocaridid found in a large Ordovician fossil rich area of Morocco measured just over 3 feet in length.

In the article reporting this new fossil find, there were several statements that I found to be rather interesting, especially since the author(s) are obviously evolutionists and written from an evolutionary point of view.

The first statement in the article I would like to comment on is:

The creatures, known as anomalocaridids, were already thought to be the largest animals of the Cambrian period, known for the “Cambrian Explosion” that saw the sudden appearance of all the major animal groups and the establishment of complex ecosystems about 540 to 500 million years ago.

Ah, the Cambrian Explosion.  If I was an evolutionist, I wouldn’t say too much about the Cambrian Explosion because it presents some major problems for their theory of evolution.  The main problem is how do they explain the sudden appearance of so many different types of animals and habitats?  Where are all of their transitional forms leading to the huge number of creatures that suddenly appear in the fossil record?

A second problem is how can they explain such rapid evolution in a relatively narrow timeframe of only 40 million years (evolutionarily speaking)?  Perhaps they can claim something like punctuated equilibrium took place but that also has its problems. Punctuated equilibrium postulates that periodically there were rapid spurts of evolutionary changes and then slowed down for awhile and then another period of rapid change and so on.  They may try to apply this to some of the creatures in the Cambrian, but how do they explain it for all of those found suddenly in the Cambrian?

The second statement in the reporting article I would like to comment on is:

These giant invertebrate predators and scavengers have come to symbolize the unfamiliar morphologies displayed by organisms that branched off early from lineages leading to modern marine animals, and then went extinct.

What did the anomalocaridids evolve into?  What modern marine animal even closely resembles an anomalocaridid?  They don’t say because they don’t know and they don’t know because it never happened.

Next is the statement:

Because hard shells fossilize and are preserved more readily than soft tissue, scientists had an incomplete and biased view of the marine life that existed during the Ordovician period before the recent discoveries in Morocco.

Finally someone admits a biased view.  We are all biased in our views of the world around us.  Sadly, many evolutionists refuse to admit that they have a bas and claim they are simply stating the facts, when in reality they are stating their biased interpretation of the facts.  All of the creationists I know, including myself, readily admit that we have bias and base our interpretation of observed facts upon our bias that starts with the Bible.

Lastly is the statement:

The animals found in Morocco inhabited a muddy sea floor in fairly deep water, and were trapped by sediment clouds that buried them and preserved their soft bodies.

Read this last statement very carefully and then think of what took place during the Genesis Flood.  As the Flood waters rose and scoured the land, it would have picked up huge amounts of silt and sand.  There would have been large clouds of sediment that rained down on the ocean floors, rapidly burying and preserving much of the life that existed there.

Just as we see different habitats in the oceans today, there would have been different habitats at the time of the Flood as well.  All of these different habitats and their occupants would have been rapidly buried and preserved, accounting for the sudden appearance of so many different animals and habitats in the fossil record.  As each new wave or cloud of sediment choked the waters, many marine animals would have suffocated and died resulting in their burials.  All of this would account for the Cambrian Explosion and the appearance of such rapid diversification that supposedly took place in the Ordovician period that followed.

Many Christians are afraid of the fossil record and how the evolutionists use it to prove their millions of years.  But there is no need to shy away from it because the fossil record is the physical testament to God’s judgment on the earth only 4400 years ago.  Thousands of animals like the anomalocaridids would have been buried and become extinct due to the Flood.

Learn to use the fossil record not only to answer the evolutionists’ claims and questions, but as a witnessing tool.  Start with Creation, the Fall, God’s judgment in the form of a worldwide Flood and then explain that there is another judgment coming and we all need a Savior.  Over the past 40 years, I have found creation evangelism to be the best witnessing method in today’s society.

Creation A Key To Dynamic Witnessing

This presentation was given live to some 2000 people, many of them students, at South Africas renowned university town of Stellenbosch. Afterwards, 30 university students came forward to publically profess faith in Christ. Its clear that in this age of science and technology, we need to deal with the evolution issue head-on, from an unashamedly biblical standpoint.
