Whenever you’ve been traveling anywhere with your family through hilly or mountainous country, the road you were on most likely ran through cuts in the hills. These road cuts often expose a number of rock layers. Some appear to be very thin layers while others can be quite thick. Sometimes there seems to be multiple layers of the same type of rock stacked on top of each other. The rock layers can be flat, slanted, and even curved. They can be different colors of grey, brown, black and white. Some are very hard and others are so soft that you can cut into them with your finger nails.
Many artists and photographers have captured the beauty and elegance of rock layers like those in Antelope Canyon and the Grand Canyon. A number of people have also built businesses by selling sandstone layers that have been cut and shaped into coasters for you table and other knick-knacks.
Rock layers are visible in mountains, hills, plateaus and canyons all over the world. Some rock layers may only cover a small area and others can stretch across several thousand miles.
Where did all these rock layers come from?
Evolutionists want you to believe that all of these rock layers were laid down slowly over hundreds of millions of years. Many believe that every tiny individual layer represents at least one or more years and when you add them all up you get millions of years. These secular scientists look at the slow processes happening today and claim that this is the way it has always been since the earth was first formed.
This is known as uniformitarianism – the present is the key to the past; and all the processes that you see today are the way things happened in the past. They have used this theory to undermine the Word of God and claim that science has proven the Bible is wrong and cannot be trusted.
But when we turn to God’s Word to see if He tells us how the rock layers formed, we find some very interesting clues that best explains their formation.
In Genesis 7:17-24 we read:
The flood continued forty days on the earth. The waters increased and bore up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. The waters prevailed and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the face of the waters. And the waters prevailed so mightily on the earth that all the high mountains under the whole heaven were covered. The waters prevailed above the mountains, covering them fifteen cubits deep. And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind. Everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died. He blotted out every living thing that was on the face of the ground, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens. They were blotted out from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those who were with him in the ark. And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days.
If you have ever seen images on television of rivers and streams flooding, you would also notice how muddy the water is and how much mud and debris is left behind after the flood subsides. Now imagine the most violent and raging flood waters you can think of and imagine them covering the entire earth for 150 days.
Those flood waters would have churned up millions of tons of dirt, mud and sand and redeposited it all over the face of the earth. By the time the flood waters receded back into the oceans, the surface of the earth would had been completely changed. The old surface of the Earth was ripped up and buried by hundreds and thousands of feet of newly deposited sediment. Scripture also tells us that the world that existed before the Flood was completely and totally destroyed:
The world that then existed was deluged with water and perished. 2 Peter 3:6
Contained in these new layers of mud, silt and sand were the remains of millions of animals that were wiped out by the flood waters. Since many of these remains were so rapidly buried, they were preserved and fossilized as the layers of sediment hardened into rock.
Some of the new layers of sediment from the Flood covered vast distances. According to Dr. Andrew Snelling, geologist from Australia who has spent over 30 years studying rocks, working in the field and in the lab:
Some of the sand grains that are in the Navajo sandstone had to have come from the Appalachians. But what river, or what process today is carrying material from the Appalachians to the Southwest?
Some of the rock layers laid down by the Genesis Flood covered large areas. Dr. Snelling tells us about one such layer:
In the Grand Canyon area, we’ve got a limestone bed, the Redwall Limestone. The same limestone can be found over here in the eastern United States.
When asked for further evidence of the Genesis Flood, Dr. Snelling talked about coal beds and tree stumps. He said:
We’ve got coal beds with trees sitting on them. And these trees, tree stumps, go through many strata, which means that before they could rot you have to have lots of sand and mud coming in quickly.
And we even have more evidence of the Genesis Flood. There are places all over the earth where rock layers are bent and folded without any cracking or breaking. Have you ever tried to bend or fold a rock without it breaking? You can’t do it unless the rock hasn’t hardened all the way. Dr. Snelling also tells us about a bend in rock layers several thousand feet thick:
Several places in the Grand Canyon, 4000 feet of different types of sand and mud and lime have been bent. And they’ve been bent while they’re still soft. Both the bottom layer and the top layer are all bent the same way, which means… the whole sequence of 4000 feet of sand and mud and lime had to have been laid down very quickly by the waters and then bent very soon afterwards.
When we start with God’s Word and then look at the world around us, what we see makes sense. Vast layers of sedimentary rocks and fossils laid down all over the earth are testimonies to God’s judgment on a wicked world, not a testimony of billions of years of slow, gradual and godless processes.
Young Tyler Cray has been looking forward to going on vacation to the Canyon for such a long time! When he finally arrives the sight of it is far more splendid than he imagined. He learns much about this incredible, scenic place (including some terrific faith-building, scientific information).
