At the first hint of a buzzing bee, most people run and hide. They see the bee as a flying stinger and nothing more. What they fail to see is a complicated social structure, pollinator of a large portion of crops, elaborate dancers and now as doctors.
One of the ways that many bees serve as their own doctors is how they attempt to treat the hive if it starts to get too hot. If a hive gets too hot, the bees begin to overheat and die, much like heat stroke in humans. To prevent this, Worker bees will arrange themselves in such a way so that when they all start flapping their wings, they create a gentle air flow through the hive to help cool it down.
Now, a team of researchers have discovered another way the bees serve as their own doctors. Dr Michael Simone-Finstrom is a post-doctoral researcher at North Carolina State University’s Department of Entomology and he recently made the unique discovery.
Both domestic and wild honey bees typically line their hives with a substance called propolis, which is a mixture of wax and plant resins which has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Domestic bees often fill any cracks in the hive with propolis.
What Simone-Finstrom discovered was that when a hive becomes infected with a potentially dangerous fungus, they will increase the amount of plant resin gathering and produce nearly 50% more propolis than normal. They use this extra propolis to treat the infected areas of the hive and will continue to do so until the fungal infection has been successfully treated and the hive is once again healthy.
During his studies, he also discovered that the bees were able to discern harmful fungi from harmless ones. If the hive became infected with a harmless form of fungi, the bees physically cut it away and removed it from the hive without bringing in any extra amounts of propolis.
The findings could prove to be beneficial to beekeepers in helping to maintain healthy hives. Traditionally, many beekeepers try to reduce the amount of propolis in a hive as it is quite sticky and messy to work with. However, with the new knowledge of its purpose, they may think twice about trying to remove it and allow the bees to serve as their own doctors and treat the hive when necessary.
The researchers want you to believe that this is something the bees learned over their millions of years of evolution. What they don’t tell you is how the bees came to know which resins to collect, how to mix it with their wax and then treat only harmful fungi. To the researchers, it’s simply something the bees evolved.
But when you stop to think about what it would take for insects like bees to learn such a complex behavior by random chance, it truly defies logic. Instead of an unexplainable evolutionary origin, I believe that God built that knowledge into the bees when He first created them on Day 5 of Creation. Just like all other instinctive behaviors that animals possess, the only logical answer is that this knowledge was hardwired into their tiny brains from the beginning. And only an infinitely wise Creator God could accomplish such a thing.
I know I’ve used this verse quite often, but it’s one of my favorites and to me explains so much about why we learn so much from studying God’s Creation.
But ask the beasts, and they will teach you; the birds of the heavens, and they will tell you; or the bushes of the earth, and they will teach you; and the fish of the sea will declare to you. Who among all these does not know that the hand of the LORD has done this? In his hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind. Job 12:7-10
Bees ‘Self-Medicate’ When Infected With Some Pathogens, Science Daily, Mar 30, 2012.
Today, the ID (intelligent design) movement is capturing headlines (and igniting controversy) around the world. But in the process, many are coming to think that a credible challenge to the dominant Darwinian naturalism of our time means backing away from a clear stand for the truth of the Bible.
Now creationist heavyweight Jonathan Sarfati, whose Refuting Evolution has the most copies in print of any creation book ever, challenges this mindset head on. In the process, By Design is set to become a classic of the creation movementin the same vein as Dr Sarfatis comprehensive Refuting Compromise, which is arguably the most powerful biblical and scientific defense of straightforward Genesis in existence.
Brilliant, deep and engaging the battle at the front linesclassic Sarfati!

When master logician/scientist Jonathan Sarfati takes on another front of the creation/evolution battle, his fans know theyre going to experience an intellectual feast of cut-and- thrust philosophical swordsmanship with the opponents of Genesis creation/ID. But readers are in for an additional treat, toohis passion (not revealed in his previous books) for digging into the details of lifes breathtaking designs.
