Would you believe that there is an animal that can be frozen in ice over the long winter months and then when the ice thaws, they come back to life as if nothing ever happened to them?

There are a peculiar group of insects called ‘weta’ (same word for singular and plural, like moose and moose), that look very similar to crickets.  The Maori (native people to New Zealand) gave the name weta to these insects.

Weta have around 70 different species and they range in size from small weta to the giant weta that can reach nearly 4 inches in length.  Gravid female giant weta can weigh up to 2.5 ounces making them one of the heaviest insects on record.  (Gravid is the term used for animals that are carrying young or eggs.  Technically, the term pregnant is only used for humans.)

Of all of the interesting weta, the mountain stone weta is the most unique of all members of the weta group.  The mountain stone weta is a tree weta found in the hills and mountains of New Zealand.  Scientists studying this creature have discovered that the higher in elevation on the mountains the larger the body size of this weta.

But that is not what makes them so unique in the animal kingdom.  Weta have been found frozen in the mountain ice down to -10ºC (14ºF) for the entire winter.  When the ice melts in the spring, the mountain stone weta miraculously comes back to life and continues on their merry weta way.

If any other animal is frozen in ice for any length of time, they die.  But not this weta.

When an animal is frozen, the water in their bodies freeze and form ice crystals.  The ice crystals expand and rupture the cell walls.  This causes damage to the tissue which eventually causes massive internal trauma and death.

In the case of the mountain stone weta, the water in their body doesn’t crystalize. Insects don’t have blood like you and me, but what they do have is a fluid called haemolymph which acts like blood for them.  There is a substance in their haemolypmh that acts like antifreeze preventing the ice crystals from forming.

So when the weta finds itself encased in ice, it goes into a stage of suspended animation where virtually all of its life functions slow down so slow that they are undetectable and the weta appears to be dead.

Evolutionists will try to convince you that somewhere thousands or millions of years ago, a weta experienced a mutation that caused it to produce the chemical that prevents them from freezing.  This weta survived the mountain winter when no other weta did, and thus was able to pass its mutation on to its offspring until we have this truly unique insect.

On the other hand, I believe that God designed the original weta with the ability to survive being frozen for the winter.  Like all of the other animals that God created, they multiplied and began to spread into different climates.  Those weta that carried the antifreeze gene(s) eventually found themselves in a cold land.  Since they had this trait, they survived the snowy winters while those that lost the trait could only survive at lower and warmer elevations.

Same facts, but different conclusions based upon different religions.  Evolutionists believe in a godless nature that is the product of random chance over millions of years and I believe in the Bible and that it’s God’s Word passed down to us so that we may know Him and His creation….
