Did you know that everything in the universe is made from 94 naturally occurring elements? These 94 elements combine together to form millions of different substances. Each one of these millions of substances has their own amazing properties.
Even though these elements can combine to form a variety of different compounds, there is one element in particular that is the most versatile of all – carbon. Carbon seems like a simple atom with only 6 protons and neutrons in its nucleus and 6 orbiting electrons but it is far from simple.
The carbon atom is the central building block of life on earth. You will find carbon in coal, leaves, fruit, muscle, hair, skin and the list goes on and on. You will even find carbon to be the principle atom used in the formation of sparkling diamonds. No other atom bonds like carbon does. Like a set of tinker toys, carbon links together into a host of different shapes and structures. Scientists studying carbon’s structure have identified over a million ways carbon bonds together with itself and other elements.
When carbon bonds to certain other elements in just the right way it forms the molecules necessary for life. If you change the property of carbon just a little, life would be impossible.
Another unique building block is the water molecule. Every scientist knows that water is special. Unlike other common liquids, when water freezes and becomes a solid, it floats instead of sinking. Why is this important? If ice sunk when it forms in lakes and ponds, it would kill off most of the fish. By floating on top, it allows the fish to survive the winter.
All living things depend on water. Water transports oxygen, moves food, removes waste material, gives plants their ability to grow and stand upright, and it keeps our bodies from becoming a tiny pile of dried up chemicals. If you changed the property of a water molecule just a tiny bit, life would be impossible.
Atoms are so intricately designed. But how did they form to begin with? What caused atoms to first appear?
Evolution teaches that about 14 billion years or so ago, the only thing that existed was a very very tiny speck on matter. Where this speck of matter came from they have no answer, but just want you to believe it was there. Then for some unknown reason that tiny speck of matter exploded and released massive amounts of energy. This was the supposed Big Bang. When that tiny speck exploded, it first created hydrogen atoms and then helium atoms. Eventually the universe kept expanding and the hydrogen and helium atoms formed clouds and these clouds started to condense in on themselves, exerting a great deal of pressure on the inside of the clouds. That pressure caused the hydrogen and helium atoms to start forming larger and larger atoms until eventually you get enough of them to start forming stars and planets. It’s kind of like when you squeeze a ball of snow. The harder you squeeze it, the more compact the center gets and eventually it changes from snow into hard ice.
However, the Bible says the infinite Creator made the building blocks of the universe and that He designed them each in their own special way just so that the earth and all of life on it could exist.
16For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Colossians 1:16-17.
The next time you look in the mirror, realize that God skillfully wove many of the different atoms together in such a special way and then breathed life into them to form you and me.
