Over the past twenty or so years, the prevailing theory for the evolution of birds has centered on theropod dinosaur evolving the ability to fly. Some believe that they evolved feathers to help them catch small prey, others believe they evolved feathers to help them jump out of trees after prey and yet others believe they evolved feathers to allow them to fly up into trees after prey. Regardless of which theory one believes, the dinosaurs still had to obtain new genetic information that caused the scales on their bodies to grow into feathers.
That is until a professor of cell biology and anatomy; Dr. Stuart A. Newman proposed a new theory for the evolution of birds. He believes the evolution of birds started with enlarged skeletal muscles
He has been studying the effects of a gene called UCP-1 (uncoupling protein-1). This gene is involved with the body’s ability to produce brown fat tissue. Brown fat helps to generate body heat in newborn human babies as well as many mammals and in birds. The lack of UCP-1 results in the inability to produce brown fat and a portion of the necessary body heat to function.
However, in birds, a large portion of the body heat is generated by the skeletal muscles. The larger the skeletal muscles, the more heat generated. According to Dr. Newman:
Unlike the scenario in which the evolution of flight is the driving force for the origin of birds, the muscle expansion theory does not require functionally operative intermediates in the transition to flight, swimming, or winglessness, nor does it require that all modern flightless birds, such as ostriches and penguins, had flying ancestors. It does suggest that the extinction of non-avian dinosaurs may have been related to a failure to evolve compensatory heat-generating mechanisms in face of the loss of UCP1.
Is this scientist serious about this statement? I have read and re-read Dr. Newman’s statement above and fail to see to the logic behind his theory. He is claiming that the enlargement of skeletal muscles and the production of more heat is what drove the evolution from dinosaur to birds. Things such as the development of flight are not a requirement and that no transitional forms are necessary.
How then does he account for the transition of scales to feathers, forearms into wings, the change from a reptilian heart to an avian heart, from a reptilian respiratory system to an avian respiratory system among other, without any transitional forms? How does he explain the gain of the new genetic information necessary to make all these changes to arise just because the dinosaur developed larger muscles?
And by claiming that no transitional forms are necessary, how does he get from dinosaur to bird without any transitional forms? Is he implying that the dinosaur developed larger muscles and then the next egg that hatched was a bird? It sounds absurd, but in essence this is what he is implying by his statement.
It’s interesting to see how far some secular scientists will go to try to explain a naturalistic origin for life and different organisms. They consistently deny the evidence from nature and the natural laws of science that say it couldn’t happen.
Have you ever had the chance to look through a welder’s helmet or goggles? They are very dark in order to protect the inner surfaces of the eyes from being burned by the intense brightness of the welding arc. When you try to see the normal world around you, the protective goggles darken everything to the point where it is hard to function. I have the distinct impression that Dr. Newman is trying to look at the natural world around him through welder’s goggles, consequently being blinded to what is really happening and what really makes sense.
More importantly, scientists like Dr. Newman consistently deny the Word of God that tells us He created birds on Day 5 of Creation and dinosaurs on Day 6. Their eyes have been blinded and their ears deafened to the truth by their gods of evolution and naturalism. It reminds me of when Jesus quoted the prophet Isaiah in Matthew 13:13-15:
This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. Indeed, in their case the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but never perceive. For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed.”

It is interesting to note that absolutely no transitional forms have been found in the fossil record connecting any of the major groups of living creatures before or since Darwin for which “peer reviewed” support can be offered. Most fossils appear very similar to their living counterpart. It is as if they were created yesterday. Rocks, Fossils and Dinosaurs is a fresh look at this age-old controversy, written in a nontechnical way.
“Dr. Tom Sharp has captured a mighty evidence for creation and he has accomplished this task in a highly readable fashion. The fossil record emphatically does not provide support for evolution, but instead points to creation – not very long ago, and by a Designer like the One we read of in Scripture. Students confronted with agressive evolutionary claims would greatly benefit from reading this book. ” Dr. John Morris, President of the Institute for Creation Research
