Do bigger brains prove evolution? If you have a misguided and warped sense of origins it does and Eiluned Pearce from Oxford’s School of Anthropology evidently fits this category.
In a recent study, Pearce reported studying 55 human skulls from the 1800s that are kept at museums in Oxford and Cambridge. The skulls represented twelve different populations from around the globe.
Pearce took various measurements of the skulls and determined that those from areas closer to the poles had bigger brains and eye sockets than from other regions of the globe. Based upon his presuppositional foundational belief in evolution and millions of years, Pearce concluded that those individuals from the polar regions evolved larger brains and eyes to cope with the long periods of little to no sunlight.
Pearce equated the large eyes in nocturnal birds such as owls to those of the larger eye sockets of the skulls that came from Scandinavia. Owls may have big eyes that allow them to see at night, but I definitely wouldn’t say that they have larger brains.
If Pearce’s logic is accurate, then wouldn’t cave dwelling animals that live in the low light and near dark conditions of the caves have larger eyes and brains? Then why is it that most troglodytes (cave dwellers) have eyes that are greatly reduced in size and function to the point of many of them being blind?
I have to wonder how many skulls from each geographic area were studied. If there were 55 skulls from 12 different populations, that averages out to no more than 4 or 5 skulls from each area. Using too few skulls from each area to base a statistical analysis upon has to cast huge doubts upon the accuracy of his study in general.
Additionally, I wonder what his study would have shown if it had included skulls of African pygmies and members of the Watusi tribe also from Africa. There is an average difference of over 2 feet in height between the two African groups and the size of their skulls also has a marked difference.
Basically, this study used a very small base number of samples and ethnic groups to base any statistically significant analysis on. I would be ashamed to publish a report based on such poor scientific methodology.
However, if his findings were accurate, it definitely doesn’t have anything to do with evolution. If anything, it would be evidence of the dispersion of people groups from the Tower of Babel. As each group moved away, they would have taken with them certain genetic characteristics with them that would become prevalent within that people group. In the case of Scandinavians, they most likely carried the traits for slightly larger skulls and eyes.
Therefore, bigger brains do not evolution make, but do support the biblical account of the Tower of Babel as found in Genesis 11.

A video presentation by Gary DeMar
Is the Theory of Evolution really science? Or, is it religion masquerading as science? More importantly, what will happen to America if evolutionists are successful in removing the Creator from public life?
The Declaration of Independence states that we are endowed by our Creator with certain “unalienable rights.” America’s founding fathers believed that earthly governments cannot convey rights; this is God’s jurisdiction. Governments must protect what only our Creator can give. But if scienceas it claimshas demonstrated that there is no Creator, from where (or what) do our rights come?
To avoid anarchy, a nation that removes God must turn to the State to grant rights. Scientific reason becomes the new God, and scientists the new priests. As politics change, the State can determine that it no longer wants to allow its citizens to have a right that it once graciously granted. Read a little further in history textbooks and you will see that we are repeating the mistakes of the past. The bloody French Revolution and the rise of Marxism in the Russian Revolution may give you some idea where America could be headed.
Filmed during the Defending the Faith Conference at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in early 2005, The Religion of Evolution exposes the religious foundation and political implications of the theory of evolution. Gary DeMar (President of American Vision) will show you why evolution is really a false religion masquerading as science and how it was purposefully designed to be the antithesis of the Christian faith. You will also learn what happens when societies remove God from their public life. The DVD package also includes a 40-page booklet which expands upon the content discussed in the presentation.
“This DVD explains in 45 minutes what sociologists and psychologists have been unable to explain in 150 years. DeMar exposes the hidden consequences of the theory of evolution; how it has affected the world outside of the biology lab. Evolution is a worldview and as such it informs how its disciples will live and act in the world. Christians must be aware of this and be able to show that evolution, when consistently believed and applied, can be used to justify anythingeven mass murder and ethnic cleansing.” Eric Rauch (Editor-in-chief, ChristianReader.com)
