Earlier this week, we posted Making Sense of How an Atheist is Made and we have received several comments, one of which caught my attention and will respond to.
How do you account for all the immorality in religious leaders? Osama Bin Laden? Jim Baker? Jim Jones? I guess they’re all actually atheists, huh? This author is just another ignorant x-tian with his bible thumping head stuck up his self-righteous butt. Atheists are every bit as “moral” as any of you theists.
Over the years, I’ve had contact with a number of atheists and find that most of them can be separated into two groups. One groups understands what the Bible says and why they don’t believe it. The other group just hates religion in general and has no idea what the Bible really says.
Those that understand the Bible also know how best to attack biblical principles and Christianity in general. They know and understand the weaknesses of most Christians and they use that knowledge to undermine the biblical foundation of believers.
Thomas Huxley is a prime example of this kind of atheist. He knew that Darwin’s theory of evolution could be used to create doubt and question of the early chapters of Genesis. If he could destroy the premise of Genesis 1-3 Huxley knew that it would ultimately lead to undermining the Cross and Christianity.
Likewise evolutionist and atheist G. Richard Bozarth also understood Christianity and the Bible. Tutored by Madalyn Murray O’Hair, Bozarth wrote extensively about atheism and how to best counter Christian beliefs. In 1979, he wrote an article for American Atheist titled The Meaning of Evolution in which he wrote:
It becomes clear now that the whole justification of Jesus’ life and death is predicated on the existence of Adam and the forbidden fruit he and Eve ate. Without the original sin, who needs to be redeemed? Without Adam’s fall into a life of constant sin terminated by death, what purpose is there to Christianity? None.
Then you have the other group of atheists who really don’t understand what the Bible says or how attack it like Bozarth, Huxley and others. They throw random sticks and stones without really knowing who they are throwing at or why they are throwing the stones and sticks to begin with.
El_loco is typical of those in this second group. They often just repeat anti-biblical rhetoric that they have heard or read from others and it seems that el_loco is no different. He attacks Christians and Christianity with generalizations that prove his lack of knowledge about them.
He seems to expect all Christians to be perfect. Once a Christian commits a sin or mistake, they fall from the mythical pedestal that he and others like him believe they occupy.
When he questions the immorality of religious leaders, he first needs to realize that they are just people and as people, they are sinners. In Genesis 6:5 we read:
The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Had el_loco read Romans 5, he would know that Christians are as condemned by their actions just as much as anyone else and in case he doesn’t own a Bible, here are verses 9-23:
What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; as it is written,
“THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; ALL HAVE TURNED ASIDE, TOGETHER THEY HAVE BECOME USELESS; THERE IS NONE WHO DOES GOOD, THERE IS NOT EVEN ONE. THEIR THROAT IS AN OPEN GRAVE, WITH THEIR TONGUES THEY KEEP DECEIVING, THE POISON OF ASPS IS UNDER THEIR LIPS; WHOSE MOUTH IS FULL OF CURSING AND BITTERNESS; THEIR FEET ARE SWIFT TO SHED BLOOD, DESTRUCTION AND MISERY ARE IN THEIR PATHS, AND THE PATH OF PEACE THEY HAVE NOT KNOWN. THERE IS NO FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THEIR EYES.”
Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
But now apart from the Law the righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
I trust that el_loco can see that Christians, more than anyone else recognize themselves as sinners and that our sins condemn us before God. Those Christians that do think of themselves as better than anyone else truly don’t understand what Christianity really is. They puff themselves up with a false sense of superiority. But before you condemn them, you have to realize that we are all sinners and fall short of the glory of God in our own way. We all have our own sins that condemn us and religious leaders are no different than anyone else.
The only real difference between atheists and Christians is how we understand our sin and our eternal future. Atheists do not believe in an eternal future. When they die, that’s it. It’s all over.
But when Christians die, we know that there is an eternity that follows our physical death here on earth. We know that those who reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior will spend eternity in torment and anguish. For those of us that profess our faith in Christ, we have been assured of a place with Him in heaven for all eternity.
And what’s more, there is nothing we can do to earn eternal salvation. Romans 6:23 tells us:
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Ephesians 2:8-10 also tells us:
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
I urge all of our followers to join me in prayer for el_loco and that the Holy Spirit will in-dwell him and cause a regeneration that will lead to salvation and a faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.
Christians do not say that atheists have no morals and some of the atheists I have known had better morals than many Christians I know. The difference is that atheists have no basis for their morals other than themselves. Christians’ morals come from God and what He teaches us in the Bible and that’s a huge difference.
In most cases, if you trace the morals held by many atheists, they eventually trace back to biblical teachings somewhere along the line, but they don’t want to admit it. We also have an inherent understanding of God which atheists try their best to ignore and deny. Being made in the image of God, there is a sense of God in us from birth.
One of my favorite examples is Helen Keller who lost her sight and hearing at 19 months of age and spent the rest of her life in darkness and silence. After her teacher, Ann Sullivan had made such great headway with Keller, it was revealed that she was a remarkable woman who understood more about life than most people that can see and hear do.
In one of her letters, Helen told Bishop Brooks that she had always known about God, even before she had any words. Even before she could call God anything, she knew God was there. She didn’t know what it was. God had no name for her — nothing had a name for her. She had no concept of a name. But in her darkness and isolation, she knew she was not alone. Someone was with her. She felt God’s love. And when she received the gift of language and heard about God, she said she already knew.
Helen Keller also had a sense of morality even before Sullivan managed to communicate with her. That sense of morality was found based in her knowledge that God was with her. Without God, there would have been no reason for Keller to have possessed a sense of morality.
So, el_loco, whether you want to admit it or not, you were created by God for His glory and there is an innate knowledge of Him within you. You can continue to choose to ignore it and spend eternity in everlasting hell, or you can stop fighting and embrace His love for you and turn to Him for your salvation and eternal soul. The choice is yours and we pray you will choose wisely.
Sinners in the Hands of Angry God is considered the most famous sermon ever preached in American history. Jonathan Edwards delivered this message on July 8, 1741 in Enfield, Connecticut. Many who heard it trembled and cried out for mercy. Others fainted. Five hundred people were converted that day.
Introduction by R.C. Sproul.
Your foot shall slip in due time.
God does not lack the power to throw wicked people into hell.
The purpose of this terrifying subject is to wake up the unconverted.
It is the wrath of the infinite God.
How dreadful is the state of those who are in danger.
When Max McLean, founder of Fellowship for the Performing Arts preached this sermon to 5000 attendees of a Ligonier Conference, the silence in the audience was deafening. Mr. McLean is also the narrator of the English Standard Version of the Bible and does a variety of live stage, conference and seminary performances.
